How to Repair Victorian Hallway Dado Panelling.

Read the full article below, which includes a project example where Frank was able to repair a discontinued Lincrusta-Walton dado panel design from 1904, now restored to former glory. The same process can be used to replicate other similar raised relief Victorian wallpapers including Anaglypta, Cameoid, Cordelova, Salamander, Lignomur and Tynecastle, all of which may still be found in period properties today.
Renovating Victorian and Edwardian Homes
If you own a period property you may also have some heritage Lincrusta or Anaglypta relief wallpapers, including dado panelling, friezes or decorative ceiling designs that are in need of repairs. We have our own growing archive, plus access to company archives, which we use to help us identify the material before renovations begin. Perhaps you want to renovate your own residential or commercial property which will include some structural re-modelling - we can help to preserve the heritage décor by making moulds of raised relief designs before work begins. Then restore any damaged areas, reproducing the textured wallpaper design in repeats of up to one metre square, where needed to reinstate your heritage design.

Raising awareness
Frank recently launched a blog, ‘Perfectly Frank’ (frankholmesltd.com). He created the regular blog in response to the new generations of owners who are keen to renovate and restore their Victorian homes to their former glory. Through the blog, he shares both his wealth of experience, highlights the options available for restoring original features, and aims to create an appreciation of the craftsmanship behind the increasingly rare heritage designs found in period properties.
Frank said, ‘After many years spent restoring historically beautiful structures I felt there was a need to talk about how to respectfully restore and look after original or renovated features. The unfortunate outcome of being in this industry is sometimes you see decorative details have been lost over time due to the lack of knowledge or a personal taste for clean lines. But thankfully there is a growing resurgence of renovators keen to restore or reinstate features in their period properties. We hope to raise awareness via the blog to understand the artistic and historical value to many of the features and how best to nurture them for future years.’
